MAX Power Mining has received the drilling license for the first well in its multi-well Natural Hydrogen program in southern Saskatchewan, with drilling operations at the Lawson target scheduled to commence around November 7, 2025. The company announced this regulatory milestone supported by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources. President and CEO Mansoor Jan described the license as representing a major step forward in advancing Canada's first dedicated Natural Hydrogen well.
The Lawson project is strategically positioned within the 200-kilometer-long Genesis Trend, an area identified as having significant potential for natural hydrogen accumulation. The drilling program will employ sophisticated geoscience instrumentation including gas chromatographs for detecting helium, nitrogen, and methane concentrations, along with a custom mass spectrometer specifically designed for hydrogen analysis. The company has established itself as an early leader in the rapidly developing Natural Hydrogen sector, having assembled a dominant district-scale land position covering approximately 1.3 million acres (521,000 hectares) of permits across prime exploration territory.
This extensive land package represents one of the largest dedicated natural hydrogen exploration portfolios in North America. High-priority initial drill target areas have been identified across this territory, with drilling activities planned to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. MAX Power's natural hydrogen initiative aligns with North America's broader shift toward decarbonization and clean energy alternatives. Natural hydrogen, also referred to as white or gold hydrogen, occurs naturally in geological formations and represents a potentially significant clean energy source that requires no energy input for production, unlike conventional hydrogen manufacturing methods that typically rely on fossil fuels or electrolysis.
The company has indicated that additional program updates will be provided before drilling operations commence at the Lawson site. MAX Power maintains additional mineral exploration interests beyond its natural hydrogen focus, including properties in the United States and Canada targeting critical minerals. These include the Willcox Playa Lithium Project in southeast Arizona, where the company reported a diamond drilling discovery in 2024. The natural hydrogen drilling program represents a significant step in Canada's emerging clean energy landscape, potentially positioning the country as a leader in this innovative energy sector while contributing to global decarbonization efforts through the development of naturally occurring hydrogen resources.
